July came up on me very quickly. This month has proved pretty busy and that has limited my reading to an extent. I’m hoping to catch some of that up on the back end of July, though, because I’ll have to stay in bed for a few days after surgery.
My number one goal this month is to finish Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse. This book has been on my TBR forever and I’m so glad I’m finally getting to it. It provides a look into indigenous fantasy. This is a genre I haven’t gotten to look into as much as I would like, but I’m hoping to read more indigenous fantasy by finishing the series and starting on To Shape a Dragon’s Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose.
I’m going to try and read the Mead Mishaps series by Kimberly Lemming as well. I’ve been wanting to read more Black fantasy authors and she is the one I’ve heard the most about so I think she’s a good jumping off point to get more into Black fantasy. The book I’m starting with is The Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon. This book follows spice trader Cinnamon as she ends up on a quest with a fiery demon. It’s supposedly not only funny, but spicy and I can’t wait to get started.
The sequel to Innovation by S.T. Gibson. Ascension is also now out and it is on my list for this month if not into the next. I loved the way the romantic trio happened in the first book, and it felt like one of the most natural and authentic portrayals I’ve seen, especially within traditionally published media.
For my nonfiction reading, I want to focus on All About Love by bell hooks. I’ve heard a lot about hook’s work and this book was on sale and it seemed a good entry point as any for my studies of Black feminism. I’m hoping to read more authors like Angela Davis at some point soon.
I think what I’ve explored above are pretty generous goals. The only other thing I’d like to accomplish this month is to start working on my fall posts for later in the year. There is always so much to do during the fall so I want to go ahead and get some posts done this summer, especially since I’ll be travelling in the fall.
For stretch goals for books I’d love to start the Lord the Rings trilogy sometime in July/August because I like to read the books around the time of year it is in the story and I haven’t done that in a few years so that’s on the top of my priority list for the next month.
Do you have any goals for July you are working on accomplishing? Tell me about them below.
Happy Reading
