Friendship and Nostalgia: Review of ‘The History of Everything’

I hope everyone is having a good week. I’m enjoying time off before my next class with my friends. I’ve been playing oneshots and working on D&D games mostly but I’ve also been getting chances to read.

Synopsis

I enjoyed the History of Everything. It focuses on two teen goth girls Agnes and Daisy. These two are best friends. They have always had each other and they grew up together. They have been making plans for each summer since they were little.

Things change though. Agnes’ mom announces a surprise. She and Agnes will be moving at the end of the summer. Everything seems desperate until they find an old scrapbook from when they were children. “The History of Everything” is an old friendship scrapbook filled with the ultimate bucket list.

They decide to follow this bucket list and make their last summer together epic. Things change though as Daisy meets a charming drummer and starts to spend more time with him. She doesn’t have as much time for Agnes. Insecurities start to bubble up and Daisy and Agnes who begin to question the state of their friendship. They wonder whether or not they can make things work being friends once they move apart.

These two slowly realize that their friendship is important and begin to try and make things right but will they have

Review

I really enjoyed the fact that Agnes and Daisy were goths. Another reviewer pointed out that there was a bit of Millennial nostalgia when it came to the fashion. And I totally agreed with that. Their fashions totally reminded me of stuff I wore 20 years ago and early 2000s Hot Topic.

I think the fact that they were goths definitely added to their story. It informed their interests, such as horror and sci-fi and added to one particular mistake with hair dye.

I’d give this graphic novel about three stars. It was cute and I loved the fashion and story but it wasn’t super memorable.

Do you like fashion being brought into the books or comics you are reading? Let me know in the comments and tell me about any cool books with a fashion focus.
