Top 5 Books for Lunar New Year Celebrations

Happy Year of the Snake! Starting today is the celebration of Lunar New Year. Also known widely as Chinese New Year. This celebration takes place throughout Asian and is based on lunisolar calendar and celebrates the coming of spring.

This is a 15 day festival that falls anywhere between January 20th and February 20th on western calendars. It ends at the following full moon. The specifics of the celebration have origins in ancient legend. In this legend a monster named Nian (The Chinese word for year), would attack villagers at the beginning of each year.

It was said that the monster was afraid of loud noises, bright lights and color red. So these elements were used in the festival to keep the beast away. This festival includes fireworks and firecrackers as well as red clothes and decorations. Money is often given to children in red envelopes and feasts are common. Some traditions honor those who have died.

The ‘animal’ of each year comes from the 12 year cycle of the Chinese Zodiac. Different things are thought about people born in each year. For example, those born in the year of the Snake are thought to be enigmatic and keep to themselves. They are also thought to be intuitive and hate to fail at reaching their goals.
