Exploring Origins Progeny: A Sci-Fi Journey Worth Reading

Hello everyone and happy Saturday. I hope you have had a good week. I’ve been reading Origins Progeny for a few weeks now. I wanted to share my thoughts about it.

Synopsis

Origins Progeny is the second book in the Children of Alpheios series. The Children of Alpheosis was the winner of a Firebird award. The novel focuses on Alina DeHerte and her son Mandin. In the first book, Alina had to keep Mandin safe from the colony she grew up on. The colony Eamine was focused on genetic engineering. They wanted to take advantage of Mandin’s genetic anomaly.

This book fast forwards three years from the original. Alina and Mandin are set up happily on their new home planet with Kiean. The colony also includes the rest of the Origins children and their families. Alina is happy and thinks that she has escaped the control of Alpheios. As well as the corporation that tried to hurt both her and Mandin.

Review

I haven’t read much sci-fi this year. I also didn’t read much last year. So, I don’t have many current book comparisons. However this book was detailed and well thought out. It reminds me of Gattaca and Battlestar Galactica.

Some of the tropes it deals with are genetic engineering, planetary colonization, class difference and an evil corporation. It has a little bit of a romance and love triangle. But I’d call those secondary plots. Especially in comparison to the focus on the larger political and social issues going on throughout the book.

I’d recommend it for anyone looking for a good sci-fi world to sink into. I didn’t read the first book before reading this. But I think I would like to go back and take a look at it. I’d give this book four stars it was engaging and an easy read. I especially enjoyed some of the issues that Alina had to deal with when it came to dealing with the evil corporation. I also enjoyed some of the genetic engineering projects that the evil corporation was up to. The piece asked some interesting questions about evolution and the importance of the rights of other lifeforms.

Have you all been reading any science fiction recently? And if so do you have any recommendations?
