Kickstart 2025: My January Reading List and Challenges

Happy New Year everyone! I hope whatever you did for the end of the year went well. My holidays were nice and quiet. I spent a good deal of time reading, writing and playing D&D with my friends.

So now is the time I lay out my plans for the month. I need to read around 12 books each month. This will help me achieve my goal of 150 books this year. This shouldn’t be a problem as in November I read 21 books and in December I read 12. Even accounting for holiday slowness I’m still pretty well set. Especially if you consider my massive numbers from Magical Readathon in April and September.

So I don’t think numbers will be an issue. There are some books I want to hit for this month though. For the Buzzfeed Reading Challenge where you have to use different words or concepts for the prompts. I’m reading Color of Lies by CJ Lyons for the prompt Truth and Lies.

For Storygraph’s Genre Challenge I’m reading a book that features video games Looking for Group by Alexis Hall. This book is an LGBT romance that features two young men who met in an MMO. There is slow burn romance and twists and it looks very good. Plus I’m trying to read more of Alexis Hall’s cataloged.

For the other challenges I’m doing, I’m planning to read Spoiler Alert by Oliva Dade. I’m reading this book for a challenge where I need to get have a fat protagonist. I’m also trying to read more non-fiction. I want to read more non-fiction for a challenge. I’m trying to read twelve non-fiction pieces in the year. The one I’m going to try to tackle in January is On Settler Colonialism by Adam Kirsh.

In terms of new releases for the month I’m anticipating My Year as Emma by Amena Kheshtchin-Kamel. A book featuring the a young Persian/Egyptian protaganist who tries to appear as a white woman. She does this so she will have more chances as an actress in Hollywood. The struggle comes when she tries to to lose herself and her culture in the process. This looks to be an interesting read.

Another new release I’m looking forward to is Cry Out Loud by Tara O’Connor. This book tells the story of a young woman who visits her distant relatives. She soon learns they plan on using her as a sacrifice as part of a generational curse.

I’m also planning to read some of my hard copies of books that I got for Christmas. On this front, I’m planning to try reading Immortal Dark by Tigest Girma. I also plan to read Sword Crossed by Freya Marske. Both of these were high on my list to buy in 2024. So I’m happy to have acquired copies of them to read this year.

In the form of arcs, I will be reading several books this month. One of them is Not a Vampire Story by Simon Doyle. This book is about an ancient vampire working at a nursing home. He tries to keep the fact that he is immortal a secret. Another ARC I’m reading is Saint Catherine by Anna Meyer. It is about a young woman. She is possibly possessed by a demon.

That’s a look into my plans for this month. What about you? Let me know your plans for the month in the comments!
