Essential Reads to Finish Before Year-End

I can’t believe it is December everyone! My second favorite month of the year. Have any of you started decorating? I had my tree up by the second week of November, but I’m a bit of a Christmas nut. How is everyone doing on their reading goals. I surpassed mine and am now shooting for 125. I wanted to do this tag I got from Books Are 42.

Are there any books you started this year you need to finish?

There are only two major books that I started this year that I need to finish. The first is Sunbringer by Hannah Kaner. I finished Godkiller but Sunbringer has been sitting on my TBR. I’d like to wrap it up because the third book is coming in April 2025.

Manga wise I’d like to finish the volumes I have left of Cat + Gamer. I’d also like to get farther in Princess Jellyfish and A Sign of Affection. I especially want to catch up on a Sign of Affection. This is because the second season of the anime will hopefully be coming out next year.

Do you have an autumnal book to transition to the end of the year?

There are many things I like to read to celebrate autumn. But the one I read this year that I really enjoyed was a spooky book called Night of the Living Queers. It is an anthology talking about how Halloween and being queer interact, and some of the stories were especially good. I really liked the one about a young woman’s mother visiting on Halloween.

I enjoyed The Fall of Whit Rivera even though I read it too early in the season. I think and would likely shift when I read it next year if I read it again. It was a sweet story of finding young love and a fall dance.

Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?

Most of my new releases are set for next year. However in January 2025 I’m looking forward to The Last Bookstore on Earth by Lily Braun Arnold.

The Last Bookstore on Earth is a queer love story set against the backdrop of a climate change apocalypse.

What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?

The top three books I’m looking to finish before the end of the year are All the Painted Stars by Emma Denny. I got the arc from NetGalley enjoying the book. It is a sweet queer historical romance. I also want to read The Other Side of the Sky by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner. It is a YA sci-fi piece about a prince and a floating city. Another one on my list is This Book is Gay. This is a YA non-fiction book. I’m reading it specifically because it was on the banned book list.

Is there a book that you think could still shock you and become your FAVORITE?

I honestly think Sunbringer is probably going to rival Godkiller for my favorite book of the year. However The Other Side of the Sky might surprise me. I tried to read it at one point and it didn’t stick. I love the idea of the plot and think it will be a good contender. Another one that will probably surprise me is This Princess Kills Monsters. It is an irreverent take on princesses and fairy tales. This theme is really one of my jams.

Have you already made reading plans for 2025?

I’ve already made reading plan for 2025. I plan to try and read 125 books with a stretch goal of 145. I want to do the magical readathon again for both semesters. I’m going to try a Bookopoly board. This will help in picking out my reads for at least a few months each year. I’d also like to create a readathon next year. Though I’m not super sure what I want the topic to be.

I’m also planning to hopefully start a booktube channel in the first part of the year. I’ve been wanting to do this for awhile so I’m pretty excited. I have a background in film production but have been mostly behind the camera. So being in front of the camera will be a bit of a shift for me.

What are you all planning to read next year? Let me know in the comments and I hope your reading goes well this month!
