Spooky Reads and Shows: October Review Roundup

How do you all do with your reading this month? So far it has been a slow month compared to September. But I always read more for magical readathon. I finished 19 books in September so I think I was due for a slow month. What I have been doing more of is watching TV and starting my bookstagram. I think I’m going to try and get that established, then maybe try Booktube towards the end of the year.

So what have I read and watched? My first read for the month was one I was finishing up for September. The Soul Jar was a science fiction anthology based around how disability might interact in different versions of the future. I reviewed it here. It was 4.5 stars, only because it was an anthology and I didn’t like some of the stories as much.

My second read of the month was “White Fragility” by Robin Deanglo. It was an important read, and I liked it a lot. This book was also around a 4 star read just because it was an easy intro to the topic and it was well structured.

The two other books I read were a part of the Dungeon Club series. I really like the way this introduces D&D to a young audience. I find the story to be diverse and engaging. I will review them both soon.

I’m also working on Night of the Living Queers. It is an anthology which is basically spooky fiction dealing with the queer identity. There are some stories I particularly like which I will go into when I finish it and review it here.

As always I’m watching Food Network for their Halloween cooking shows. I’m a bit of a foodie, and a baker when I can find the energy. And I manged to make a cake this month around all my other things. I’m hoping to slip in some bread before the month is over but we will see how my schedule looks.

The two spooky things I’m watching are the new Goosebumps series. I believe it was made in 2023. It takes many of the old Goosebumps stories from the 1990’s TV series. The new show turned them into a more structured and less episodic series. Like all the different episodes have their own plots but they tie into a larger one.

Which seems to be about a boy who met an ill end through the actions of his high school friends. His ghost seems to be taking it out on his friend’s children.

The other spooky thing I’m watching Agatha All Along. I’m loving it so far I’m not caught up, so no spoilers please. I’m loving the interactions between Wiccan and Agatha and Agatha and Rio. The whole ensemble cast is incredibly strong and I can’t wait to watch more of it.

In conclusion it’s been a pretty good month reading and watching wise. I hope to be more productive through November where I’m going to focus on Indigenous history and fiction.

What are you all focusing on for November? Let me know in the comments.
