This beautiful illustrated book about the Korean War was a great way to wrap up Asian Readathon, even though I’ll probably be continuing a few of the titles into next month.
The art style of the book is striking with bold colors outlining nature and the characters, contrasted by the way the machinery is done in dark, or grey colors showing the difference between it and the world surrounded by the protagonist. I especially like the use of blue throughout the work including the use on the main character herself as well as the sea that surrounds her.
The main story focuses on a little girl who lives near the sea. As a conflict goes on, she and her family start taking in refugees. At first it is interesting but she quickly gets tired of being in a full house, and grows frustrated.
Her parents and family teach her the importance of looking out for others. The story is based on Ann Suk Wang and Hannah Cha’s relatives stories from the Korean War.

This book definitely ranks 4 stars.
